When CBS VFX LA needed to deliver three high-profile productions inside a single Los Angeles LED volume, they turned to stYpe RedSpy camera tracking and StypeLand XR for a workflow that could move fast without sacrificing quality. The result was seamless virtual set extensions, five-second environment switching, and real-time director control across three entirely different broadcast and commercial projects.

The Brief

Today’s production market demands more creativity for less money. CBS VFX LA turned that challenge into a competitive advantage. They leaned into virtual production and, crucially, chose tools that could match the pace of their team.

Three Productions, One Volume

Within weeks of each other, the CBS VFX LA team delivered three distinct projects:

First, a John Legend commercial featuring a full virtual Augusta National golf course as a tracked set extension beyond the LED wall. The director triggered the reveal live via the StypeLand XR controller, instantly transforming a dark stage into a full environment.

Next, a HelloFresh campaign tied to Paramount+ originals. This project required over 50 recipe setups across four distinct lighting moods. Because StypeLand XR’s multi-setup configuration management was already in place, transitions between night, day, magic hour, and golden hour each took approximately five seconds.

Finally, a Survivor promotional spot compositing host Jeff Probst into a dense jungle environment, entirely in-studio. The team described the final result as visually indistinguishable from an on-location shoot.

Why It Worked

The key to consistency across all three productions was a single unified system. RedSpy camera tracking, StypeLand XR rendering, and LED calibration all lived in one interface. Therefore, the crew communicated in one language, directors received real-time visual feedback, and no time was lost translating between systems.

“stYpe allows us to do set extensions, which basically lets us render out this 3D environment beyond the LED wall.”

A Partnership That Builds

The relationship between CBS VFX LA and stYpe extended well beyond the shoot. stYpe incorporated custom requests from the production team directly into the platform. As a result, other studios worldwide now benefit from solutions developed on these projects. This is the model stYpe applies across its client base: production-driven development, where real-world use cases shape the product roadmap.
