CBS Los Angeles Debuts a Next-Gen AR/VR Weather Studio Powered by stYpe

CBS Los Angeles has launched a new AR and VR weather studio powered by the stYpe Follower motion capture system. This upgrade brings a fresh way to explain weather, because the visuals now react to the presenter’s movement in real time. As a result, viewers get clearer and more engaging forecasts from the very first moment.

The core of the setup is the stYpe Follower motion capture system. KCAL meteorologists can walk through 3D weather environments that update instantly as they move. The studio includes 27 Follower Witness cameras and a camera mounted Follower Spyder Module, which keeps graphics and camera motion aligned at all times.

To make the workflow simple, presenters use two Follower iPad Trackers. These tablets allow them to trigger scenes and control graphics with a single tap. The tracking is supported by four Follower 4 Channel Receivers, sixteen LED Beacons and four Mini Single Beacons, which provide accurate positioning across the full stage.

Camera movement in the virtual environment comes from a HumanCrane rig with StypeKit Autoaim. This combination keeps motion smooth and consistent, which helps the graphics blend naturally with the studio layout. Thanks to this full setup, CBS can guide viewers through microclimates, wind patterns and wildfire zones in a more intuitive way.

In addition, the entire workflow operates as a single connected system. Because of this, weather segments feel more dynamic and easy to follow. It also shows how broadcasters can use the stYpe Follower motion capture system to modernize their storytelling.
